About the Role

Sydney-based construction company specialising in structural steel supply, fabrication and installation across residential, commercial and industrial projects.

We are looking for an experienced Structural Steel Estimator to join our team and assist with our growing tendering and project workload.

We need someone who is switched on, organised, technically capable and able to work independently. You must have a strong understanding of structural steel and be confident reviewing drawings, identifying the full scope of works and preparing accurate estimates.

We already have our own estimating spreadsheets, pricing schedules, proposal templates and established systems. You will be trained in our processes, but we expect you to bring solid structural steel estimating experience and the ability to manage projects with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Structural Steel Estimating & Take-Offs

Review architectural, structural and engineering drawings to understand the complete steel scope.

Prepare accurate material take-offs, including steel member sizes, quantities, lengths, weights and total tonnage.

Identify structural steel components including UB, UC, PFC, RHS, SHS, CHS, plates, cleats, connections and associated materials.

Identify fabrication, welding, surface treatment, transport and installation requirements.

Prepare detailed cost estimates using our existing Excel spreadsheets and pricing templates.

Identify discrepancies, missing information and potential variations within tender documentation.

Understand project specifications, inclusions, exclusions and site requirements.

Review revised drawings and identify changes in steel quantities and project costs.

Tendering & Client Correspondence

Review new tender enquiries and assess project requirements.

Manage and monitor current tenders, outstanding quotations and submission deadlines.

Prepare professional pricing proposals using our existing company templates.

Correspond with builders, contractors and clients regarding tender enquiries, drawing clarifications and pricing submissions.

Follow up outstanding quotations and assist with securing new projects.

Prepare supplier enquiries and obtain material and subcontractor pricing where required.

Maintain organised tender records, pricing registers and project documentation.

Work closely with our Sydney-based Project Manager to finalise estimates and proposals before submission.

Essential Requirements

Minimum 5 years' experience in structural steel estimating or a closely related steel fabrication environment.

Previous experience estimating structural steel projects for Australian builders or fabricators is highly preferred.

Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication, connections and installation methods.

Ability to independently interpret structural and architectural drawings.

Experience preparing detailed steel take-offs and calculating tonnage.

Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

Good understanding of Australian structural steel standards and industry practices.

Strong written and spoken English, particularly for professional client correspondence.

Excellent attention to detail, organisation and time management.

Ability to work independently, manage multiple tenders and meet deadlines.

Reliable computer and internet connection.

Highly Regarded Skills

The following experience would be a major advantage:

Tekla Structures modelling and structural steel detailing.

Preparing structural steel shop drawings and fabrication drawings.

Experience producing material take-offs directly from Tekla models.

Understanding steel connection detailing and design coordination.

Experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam or other estimating software.

Previous experience working directly with Australian structural steel fabricators.

Experience pricing both supply-only and supply-and-install steel packages.

Candidates with both structural steel estimating and Tekla detailing experience will be highly regarded.

Career Development

We are looking for someone interested in a long-term position with the opportunity to grow alongside MIREK Construction.

The successful candidate will initially focus on estimating, material take-offs, tender management and preparing pricing proposals.

As the business expands, there will be opportunities to take on greater responsibility, including managing the estimating department, coordinating junior estimators and progressing into a Senior Estimator or Estimating Manager position.

Salary reviews and promotion opportunities will be based on experience, performance and demonstrated capability.
