About the Role

ABOUT US
Structmate is an Australian quantity surveying and estimating consultancy based in Sydney. We provide take-offs, Bills of Quantities and tender estimates for builders and trade contractors across Australia.

We are expanding into steel and metal fabrication estimating and are looking for an experienced estimator to join our support team on an ongoing basis.

THE ROLE
You will prepare quantity take-offs and first-pass cost estimates for steel fabrication tenders, working directly with our Australian lead estimator, who reviews all work before it goes to the client.

Typical scope includes:

  • Structural and secondary steelwork
  • Platforms, stairs, ladders, walkways and handrails
  • Support frames, brackets and equipment supports
  • Security caging, gates, barriers and enclosures
  • Architectural and miscellaneous metalwork
  • Mining and industrial fabrication

Your responsibilities:

  • Review tender drawings and specifications
  • Measure steel quantities and convert to tonnage by member type (UB, UC, PFC, SHS, RHS, CHS, angles, flat bar, plate)
  • Measure handrails, grating, mesh and cladding (lm / m2)
  • Count connections, base plates, cleats, bolts and fixings
  • Calculate surface areas for hot-dip galvanising and protective coatings
  • Prepare a first-pass costing in our Excel template (materials, fabrication hours, coatings, transport)
  • List any drawing discrepancies, missing information and suggested exclusions/clarifications
  • Keep take-off records neat, marked-up and traceable

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in steel / metal fabrication estimating or take-off
  • Strong knowledge of steel sections and weights (Australian standards / InfraBuild-OneSteel tables preferred)
  • Confident with at least one take-off tool: Bluebeam, PlanSwift, CostX or similar
  • Advanced Excel
  • Able to read structural and shop/fabrication drawings accurately
  • Good written English and reliable communication
  • Able to work at least partly within Australian business hours (AEST/AEDT)
  • Strict confidentiality – you will be required to sign an NDA

HIGHLY REGARDED

  • Experience estimating for a fabricator (not just a builder)
  • Tekla Structures or Advance Steel experience
  • Knowledge of fabrication labour hours per tonne
  • Previous Australian, NZ or Middle East project experience

HOW TO APPLY
Applications that don't follow these steps will not be considered.

1. Start your application with the word "GALV" in the first line.
2. Tell us briefly:

  • Years of steel/metal fabrication estimating experience
  • The take-off software you use
  • The types of steel projects you have priced (e.g. industrial platforms, commercial structural steel, handrails, mining)
  • Your expected hourly rate

3. Attach your CV.
4. Attach a sample steel take-off or estimate. Please remove or blank out client names, project names and logos – do NOT send documents you are not permitted to share.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete a short PAID test take-off on a sample steel package.

We are looking for a long-term working relationship with the right person.
