Hiring: Stand-Up Comedy Writer

About the Role

We are looking for a creative and talented Stand-Up Comedy Writer who can develop original, funny, and engaging material for live comedy performances.

The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of humor, storytelling, comedic timing, and joke development. You should be able to turn everyday experiences, observations, personal stories, and relatable situations into entertaining stand-up comedy material.

We want someone who understands what makes an audience laugh and can write material that sounds natural when performed on stage.

Key Responsibilities

• Write original stand-up comedy material, including jokes, comedic stories, observations, and humorous ---------- .
• Develop relatable and entertaining topics that connect with different audiences.
• Create strong punchlines, setups, callbacks, and unexpected twists.
• Develop longer comedic stories with engaging beginnings, middles, and endings.
• Explore different comedy styles, including observational, storytelling, self-deprecating, and situational humor.
• Ensure the material sounds natural and conversational when performed live.
• Research topics and develop fresh perspectives for comedy routines.
• Revise and refine scripts based on feedback and performance requirements.
• Collaborate with the team to brainstorm new comedy topics and ideas.

Qualifications

• Experience in stand-up comedy writing, comedy scriptwriting, or creative writing.
• Strong sense of humor and understanding of different comedy styles.
• Excellent storytelling and joke-writing abilities.
• Ability to create original material rather than relying on recycled jokes.
• Understanding of comedic timing, punchline delivery, and audience engagement.
• Ability to write material that feels authentic and natural when spoken.
• Open to feedback and revisions.
• A portfolio or samples of previous comedy writing are an advantage.

Applicant Assessment – Stand-Up Comedy Writing Sample

As part of our selection process, applicants will be asked to write an original stand-up comedy routine based on the following topic:

Topic: "The Reality of Being an Adult"

Write a stand-up comedy routine about the funny and frustrating realities of adulthood.

You may explore topics such as:

• Paying bills and managing expenses.
• Realizing that being an adult isn't as exciting as you imagined.
• Work responsibilities and dealing with everyday stress.
• Physical changes and getting older.
• The difference between how you imagined adulthood and what it actually is.

Submission Requirements:

• Format: Stand-up comedy script.
• Length: Approximately 3–5 minutes of live performance material.
• Include a strong opening, comedic setups, punchlines, and a memorable closing.
• The material should have a natural, conversational delivery.
• Applicants are encouraged to use original observations and unexpected perspectives.
• The submission must be their own original work.

Applicants will be evaluated based on:
