About the Role

About Us
Deryan Financial Group is a family-owned accounting and finance firm with over 40 years of experience helping clients make smarter financial and lending decisions.
We combine the expertise of mortgage broking and accounting to deliver end-to-end solutions — from securing the right loan to optimising tax and business outcomes.

The Opportunity
If you're an experienced bookkeeping or payroll professional who takes pride in accuracy, organisation, and compliance — this is your opportunity to take ownership of payroll processing and BAS preparation within our growing accounting division.
You'll manage the end-to-end payroll function for a portfolio of small business clients, prepare and lodge quarterly and monthly Business Activity Statements, and ensure client records are reconciled and compliant with current ATO, Fair Work and superannuation requirements. You'll work closely with our senior accountants and tax agents, keeping payroll and BAS cycles running to deadline so the team can focus on advisory and more complex work.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys autonomy, thrives on structure and recurring deadlines, and is confident managing a high-volume client base through weekly, fortnightly, monthly and quarterly cycles.

What You'll Do

  • Process payroll for a portfolio of small business clients across weekly, fortnightly and monthly cycles, including new employee setup, terminations, leave and award interpretation.
  • Lodge Single Touch Payroll (STP) events and complete end-of-year STP finalisation.
  • Calculate and reconcile superannuation guarantee obligations and process quarterly super payments.
  • Prepare and lodge monthly and quarterly BAS and IAS, including GST, PAYG withholding and PAYG instalments.
  • Reconcile GST, payroll and superannuation accounts to the general ledger before each lodgement.
  • Review client-supplied records and bookkeeping for completeness, following up directly with clients on missing or unclear information.
  • Prepare BAS workpapers for senior accountant or tax agent review and sign-off, addressing review queries promptly.
  • Manage related ATO correspondence, payment plans and follow-ups.
  • Maintain accurate, well-organised client files and a lodgement calendar covering all payroll, super and BAS due dates.
  • Communicate directly with clients regarding payroll queries, lodgement status and amounts payable.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to streamline payroll and BAS administration.

About You

  • 3+ years' experience processing payroll and preparing BAS in an Australian public practice, bookkeeping or tax agent environment (essential).
  • Sound working knowledge of GST, PAYG withholding, PAYG instalments, superannuation guarantee and STP requirements.
  • Working knowledge of modern awards, leave entitlements and Fair Work obligations.
  • Experience with Xero Payroll and Xero (essential); MYOB, QuickBooks or KeyPay/Employment Hero an advantage.
  • BAS Agent registration, or eligibility to register, highly regarded.
  • Confident managing a high-volume client base with strong attention to recurring deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Professional communication skills and ability to manage client relationships independently.
  • Organised, reliable, and proactive in identifying issues before they arise.

What's on Offer

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Supportive, professional, and family-oriented team culture.
  • Opportunity to build deep expertise in payroll and BAS compliance within a multi-disciplinary firm.
  • Exposure to a wide range of clients and industries.
