About the Role

Pay: $6,000 to $7,000 USD a month
Schedule: Full time. Core hours 9am to 2pm US Eastern on working days.
Reports to: Senior Director, Operations. Works directly with the owner.

You are the person other accountants bring the problem to. The difference nobody can find. The intercompany balance that will not tie. The client who has run out of patience. You fix it, and then someone above you, who often knows less about it than you do, d ---------- what happens next. This job gives you the decisions.

About Monterra
Monterra is a US accounting and tax firm. We have served business owners since 1991. Most of our clients own many businesses at once: groups with ten, twenty or more locations, each its own company, with numbers that have to tie across all of them.

  • Specialists. We have built the firm around owners of many businesses, so you spend your time on hard, interesting books instead of a long tail of one-off files.
  • Thirty-five years, and growing. New multi-location groups signed with us this fall, and not one client has left us in the past year.
  • We build our own tools. We wrote our own tax planning software, and we are rebuilding accounting the same way.
  • Remote by design. The whole firm works remotely. You will not be the one person on a different clock in an office that forgot you exist.

The role
We have more good clients than we have people to serve them, so we are hiring one person to run our whole client accounting department: the team, the standards, the final review and the numbers. There is no partner to wait on. When you see a better way to run it, you have the authority to change it. We are rebuilding the department around automation, and you d ---------- what gets automated and write the procedure the team follows once it works.

What you will own

  • The team: workloads, deadlines, coaching, hiring and performance for every accountant, in-house and outsourced
  • Final technical review of every close and financial statement before it reaches a client
  • One written method for every recurring task, plus a quality control program with monthly sample checks and an error log
  • Hours against benchmark and realization for every client, reported to leadership on one page each month
  • Onboarding each new client to a first clean close, and the client call when something goes wrong
  • The automation rebuild, starting with bank reconciliation matching, and a second-in-command who can run the department without you

Requirements
We judge what you have done, not how long you did it. You must be able to show us:

  • A team of accountants you ran for clients, and what changed because you ran it: closes that came in on time and errors that went down
  • Your record as the final reviewer on other accountants' work: closes and financial statements for multi-entity groups
  • A bank reconciliation you did yourself in the last twelve months
  • A procedure you wrote that a team actually follows
  • An outsourced or remote team you held to a standard, with numbers to prove it
  • English strong enough to explain a set of financial statements, or a mistake in them, to a US business owner on a live call

Nice to have

  • Franchise accounting, including 13-period calendars
  • Thomson Reuters Accounting CS
  • Accounting work you automated, and the hours it saved

You do not need a degree, a licence, a particular title or a set number of years.

Pay and perks

  • $6,000 to $7,000 USD a month, paid in US dollars wherever you live
  • Annual bonus tied to your team's performance.
  • Work from anywhere. Fully remote, in any country.
  • Run your own day outside the core hours.
  • A short line to the top. Your proposals go to the Senior Director, Operations and the owner, and you get an answer.
  • Your own bench. You choose and develop the person who will be your number two.
  • Paid time off. Two weeks to start, plus all US holidays and the public holidays where you live.

Your first year

  • First 30 days: You learn every client and meet every accountant. You start on the bank reconciliations for our largest client group.
  • By day 90: The buck stops with you on every client close and you run the weekly workload review. Your review standard and onboarding checklists are in use. Your first monthly report is sent.
  • By month 6: Every recurring task has one written method. Monthly quality checks are running. Our outsourced partner is held to the hours and quality we agreed, with data.
  • By month 12: You own the department. At least one automated workflow is live under your procedures. Someone on your team can run the department for two weeks while you are away.

How we hire
We do not screen on job titles or count your years. We ask what you did, with numbers, and who can confirm it.
1. Application. About 35 minutes. Three short accounting tests and questions about your results. No cover letter.
2. Work test one. A month-end close review, a bank reconciliation and a written procedure, built from the work you would own here. About 2.5 hours.
3. Work test two. Your first weeks in the seat, in one data pack. About 2.5 hours.
4. Interview with the owner. We contact your references after the interview, not before.

Every application gets a reply. You will never wait weeks in silence wondering whether anyone read your work.
