Senior Controller – Accounting, Financial Planning & Strategic Analysis
Confidential employer
All Volleyball (AVB) is a U.S.-based volleyball equipment and apparel company generating approximately $12 million in annual revenue. Our business includes team and club sales, ecommerce, custom apparel, and private-label products.
We're transforming our business to become simpler, more profitable, and financially sustainable.
We're seeking an exceptional, hands-on Controller to take ownership of our accounting, financial reporting, cash management, and strategic financial planning.
This is a long-term opportunity with significant responsibility and direct access to company ownership.
About the Role
We're looking for someone who combines three capabilities:
1. Expert Accountant: Can independently manage bookkeeping, inventory accounting, reconciliations, and monthly financial statements.
2. Strong Financial Analyst: Can build financial forecasts, cash-flow projections, and sophisticated models to evaluate business decisions.
3. Proactive Financial Leader: Takes ownership, improves processes, develops support staff, and challenges management when necessary.
This is a hands-on position, not a traditional Controller role supervising a large accounting department.
You'll have approximately 20–30 hours per week of support from an existing Philippines-based team member who can be trained to handle accounting and administrative responsibilities. U.S.-based administrative support will also be available.
Additional support may be considered if justified by workload and overall department cost.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Operations
- Own daily accounting, bookkeeping, AP/AR, and general ledger accuracy in QuickBooks Online.
- Manage bank, credit card, loan, and payment processor reconciliations.
- Own month-end close and prepare accurate financial statements.
- Manage inventory accounting, COGS, and gross margin reporting.
- Reconcile transactions across Shopify, Cin7 Core, Amazon, and other sales channels.
- Maintain accounting controls, documentation, and efficient processes.
Cash Flow & Financial Reporting
- Own and maintain a rolling 13-week cash-flow forecast.
- Monitor liquidity, borrowing availability, vendor payments, and working capital.
- Prepare monthly P&L, balance sheet, cash-flow reports, and financial dashboards.
- Develop budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis.
- Analyze profitability by business unit, sales channel, and product category.
- Communicate financial risks and recommendations directly to ownership.
Strategic Financial Modeling & Business Transformation
- Build integrated financial models connecting revenue, profitability, balance sheet, and cash flow.
- Evaluate business pivots, including exiting or restructuring sales channels and business units.
- Model changes in staffing, operating expenses, gross margins, inventory, and working capital.
- Develop multiple financial scenarios and evaluate their impact on profitability, liquidity, and debt.
- Challenge assumptions and provide recommendations to support major business decisions.
Example: Model the transition from a $12M company to an $9M company, determining the margins, staffing, expenses, and cash requirements necessary to achieve $200K in annual profit. We need someone who can build these models independently—not simply update existing spreadsheets.
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Train and delegate responsibilities to existing support staff.
- Personally perform accounting work when necessary.
- Improve systems, automation, reporting, and financial controls.
- Identify opportunities to simplify financial operations.
- Help the CEO better understand the company's financial performance.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including Controller or senior accounting responsibilities.
- Extensive hands-on QuickBooks Online and U.S. accounting experience.
- Strong inventory accounting, COGS, and month-end close expertise.
- Proven cash-flow forecasting and financial modeling experience.
- Advanced Excel or Google Sheets capabilities.
- Experience preparing budgets, financial statements, and profitability analysis.
- Ability to train and oversee accounting support staff.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Highly organized, proactive, analytical, and comfortable working independently.
Preferred: Ecommerce, wholesale/distribution, manufacturing, Shopify, Cin7 Core, integrated three-statement modeling, and business restructuring experience.
Schedule & Compensation
- Position: Full-time, 40 hours per week.
- Location: Remote, Philippines.
- Schedule: Minimum four hours of daily overlap with U.S. Central business hours.
- Compensation: $3,000–$4,000 USD/month, negotiable based on experience, qualifications, and overall staffing structure.
- Reporting: Directly to the CEO.
We're willing to pay above typical local market rates for an exceptional professional who can take meaningful ownership of our finance function.
