Junior Accountant (Remote)
Confidential employer
Experience: 2 to 3 years
Employment Type: Contract
Location: Remote
Schedule: At least 4 hours of overlap with US Eastern Time
Pay: $800 USD per month
About Us
We’re a small accounting firm handling bookkeeping, month-end close, and financial reporting for US startups and small businesses. We hold ourselves to a high standard: books that tie, closes that land on time, and work that holds up under review. Founders count on us to get it right so they can focus on running their business.
The Role
We’re looking for a Junior Accountant who takes pride in clean, accurate work and keeps people in the loop. You’ll own day-to-day bookkeeping and month-end close prep for a set of US clients, with a senior team member reviewing your work. We’ll give you clear processes and real feedback. In return, we expect work that’s complete, supported, and ready for review the first time. This is a great fit for someone who knows QuickBooks Online well and wants to grow into running client closes end to end.
What You’ll Do
- Code and categorize bank, credit card, and Ramp transactions in QuickBooks Online, accurately and on schedule
- Reconcile bank, credit card, and clearing accounts monthly, with every balance tied to a statement or support
- Process bills and AP, and keep AR aging current and clean
- Own month-end close prep for assigned clients, including accruals, prepaids, payroll entries from Gusto, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Build Excel workpapers that tie to the GL and trace back to source documents
- Draft P&L and Balance Sheet flux commentary that explains what moved and why
- Spot issues early, investigate them, and come with a proposed fix, not just the problem
- Clear review notes promptly and keep open items moving until they’re resolved
- Keep your tasks and close status current in ----------
- Keep clients and the team updated through Missive and Slack, and flag delays, blockers, or missing documents as soon as you see them
- Follow up with clients on open questions and missing support without waiting to be asked
- Follow our close checklists, documentation standards, and review process
- Use AI tools like Claude to work faster, and check every output against source
What Good Looks Like
- Your reconciliations tie, and your workpapers are easy for a reviewer to follow
- Your close prep is done on time, without reminders
- Your review notes get fewer over time
- You ask questions early instead of guessing
- People know where your work stands without having to chase you
- Your messages are short, clear, and easy to act on
- You notice what needs doing next and get it moving
Required Qualifications
- 2 to 3 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience
- At least 1 year of hands-on QuickBooks Online experience
- Solid grasp of accrual accounting, journal entries, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Strong Excel skills (SUMIFS, lookups, pivot tables)
- A strong eye for detail and the habit of tying every number back to source
- Ability to manage several clients and deadlines at once
- Clear, professional written and spoken English, including with US clients
- A proactive mindset: you raise issues early and keep things moving on your own
- Willingness to work at least 4 hours overlapping with US Eastern Time
Equipment Requirements
- Intel i5 or Apple M1 processor or better
- At least 16 GB RAM
- Internet speed of at least 25 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up
- Working webcam and headset
- A quiet space for video calls
