US Accountant - Food Brand

Rate: Up to $2,500/month, depending on experience (USD, paid twice a month)
Position: Accounting Manager (AI-Native)
Schedule: US Business Hours (Pacific Time)

Need someone to own the full accounting function in house for a fast-scaling premium food brand sold through major retail, the natural channel, and direct to consumer. You will run the monthly close end to end, own the general ledger and financial statements, own inventory and cost accounting, and lead retail and distributor deduction recovery. This is an AI-native finance function: the books are in Xero, operational data in Airtable, and we use Claude every day. It is a hands-on, build-and-own role on a lean team. You run the books directly, not through an outside firm, and I don’t babysit.

Key Requirements

5+ years of hands-on, full-cycle accounting for US-based companies, personally running month-end close and preparing financial statements (not just reviewing someone else’s).
Strong command of US GAAP, with books kept audit-ready and lender-ready.
Genuinely strong with AI in your accounting work. You already use Claude or a similar tool day to day to reconcile, categorize, analyze, and automate, and you always check its output before it hits the books. This is what we care about most.
Able to build dashboards and automated workflows yourself, not just read reports someone else built.
Comfortable owning and running a cloud finance stack like Xero and Airtable, not just working inside it. Experience with QuickBooks, NetSuite, or ---------- is a plus.
Inventory and cost accounting for a physical-product business, or the ability to pick it up fast: reconcile the ledger to stock and keep cost of goods clean. CPG, food, or consumer goods is a plus, but strong fundamentals from any industry will be considered.
Exposure to retail or distributor deductions and chargebacks, or a clear ability to learn and run it.
Excellent written and spoken English, with proactive communication across time zones.
Self-driven: works independently in a fast-paced environment, flags issues early, and closes loops without being asked.

(Note: We are explicitly looking for hands-on, build-and-own accountants who run the full function and genuinely use AI. Oversight-only managers who delegate the actual bookkeeping, and anyone who has only ever worked inside a system someone else built, will not be considered.)
