About the Role

We are looking for a patient, engaging English/Reading tutor for a 6th-grade student.

We need someone who can provide BOTH academic support with current 6th-grade English/Language Arts work and help strengthen foundational reading skills.

Tutoring may include:

  • 6th-grade English/Language Arts homework
  • Reading comprehension
  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar and writing
  • Spelling
  • Preparing for quizzes and tests
  • Assistance with school projects
  • Reading practice
  • Phonics and phonemic awareness
  • Decoding unfamiliar words
  • Building reading fluency
  • Strengthening overall reading skills

Our daughter has dyslexia and ADHD, so patience and the ability to explain concepts in different ways are extremely important.

Experience working with students with dyslexia is strongly preferred. If you do not have direct dyslexia experience, you should have strong knowledge of phonics, phonemic awareness, decoding, reading comprehension, and evidence-based reading instruction.

This is NOT simply a homework-help position. We want someone who can help her complete her current schoolwork while also helping strengthen the reading skills that will make her a more confident and independent reader.

Schedule:

Tutoring will generally be Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday evenings.

Sessions will normally begin between approximately 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM Central Time (Texas, USA) and last approximately 60–90 minutes.

Saturday tutoring may also be available and has more scheduling flexibility.

You do not have to be available every one of these days, but please clearly state which days and times you can consistently work.

Requirements:

  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Clear pronunciation
  • Experience tutoring or teaching children
  • Strong understanding of English/Language Arts
  • Strong reading and comprehension skills
  • Patient and encouraging teaching style
  • Comfortable working with a child with dyslexia and ADHD
  • Reliable internet connection and video/audio for online tutoring
  • Ability to prepare lessons or practice activities when needed

We are looking to hire immediately.

TO APPLY:

Please answer:

1. What experience do you have teaching reading, phonics, phonemic awareness, or students with dyslexia?

2. A 6th-grade student can read many words but struggles to sound out unfamiliar words and sometimes has difficulty remembering what she just read. How would you work with her?

Please include your teaching/tutoring experience, education or certifications, hourly rate, and availability in Central Time (Texas).
