Video Editor - Direct Response Ads - Ecommerce
Confidential employer
PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING:
We’re looking for a full-time Video Editor to join our creative team and produce high-performing direct-response video ads for Meta/Facebook and Instagram.
This is not a traditional video editing position.
We are not looking for someone who simply knows Premiere Pro, CapCut, or After Effects.
We are looking for an editor who understands advertising psychology, viewer retention, pacing, visual storytelling, and performance creative.
You need to understand how to take a script and turn it into an advertisement that keeps someone watching long enough to eventually purchase.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
You will receive scripts, hooks, creative direction, product assets, customer research, and reference advertisements.
Your job is to turn those materials into finished direct-response advertisements.
You should understand:
What type of footage belongs in each section of a script
How visuals should reinforce what the voiceover is saying
When a visual should demonstrate the problem
When a visual should demonstrate the desired outcome
When product footage should appear
When customer-style footage is more effective than polished brand footage
How long each clip should remain on screen
When visual changes are necessary to prevent attention from dropping
How to create pattern interrupts without making the advertisement chaotic
How to visually build curiosity
How to maintain momentum through longer advertisements
How to use subtitles, text overlays, screenshots, reviews, graphics, zooms, crops, transitions, and sound effects appropriately
How to make a 2–3 minute advertisement continue feeling engaging throughout
We do not want editors who simply place random stock footage over a voiceover.
Every clip should have a reason for being there.
This Is Performance Creative
Our advertisements are not created randomly.
Each script and creative batch is developed around specific variables such as:
Customer avatar
Market awareness level
Market sophistication
Specific customer problem
Core desire
Advertising angle
Hook
Unique mechanism
Customer objections
Proof
Emotional journey
Creative format
Specific variable being tested
As the editor, you need to understand the strategy behind the script so the visuals support it properly.
For example, if a section of the script is designed to create skepticism, curiosity, authority, urgency, or emotional tension, the footage and editing should reinforce that purpose.
You should be able to read a script and understand:
What is the viewer supposed to feel here?
What does the viewer need to see here?
What visual would make this claim more believable?
Where is attention likely to drop?
Do we need a visual change here?
Is this clip helping the story or simply filling space?
That judgment is extremely important to us.
Hooks Are Extremely Important
The first few seconds of an advertisement can determine whether the rest of the video ever gets watched.
You will regularly receive one main script with multiple hook variations.
You should understand how to make each hook feel visually distinct and compelling while transitioning naturally into the same main body of the advertisement.
We expect strong judgment around:
Opening visuals
First-frame selection
Pattern interrupts
Text placement
Curiosity
Pacing
Visual juxtaposition
Product reveals
Problem demonstrations
Emotional reactions
Authority
Results-focused openings
A weak opening can ruin an otherwise strong advertisement.
PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE IS STRONGLY PREFERRED
We are primarily interested in editors who have previous experience producing direct-response advertisements that actually generated sales.
If you have worked on ads that scaled significantly, we want to see them.
Preference will be given to applicants who can show advertisements they personally edited that achieved:
$10,000+ in ad spend while maintaining a 2.0+ ROAS.
If you have this experience, include proof showing:
The advertisement
Spend
ROAS
Revenue or purchase performance
Relevant date range
You should also clearly explain what part of the creative you were responsible for.
If you have edited high-spend winning ads, that carries significantly more weight with us than a traditional editing reel.
What You'll Be Editing
The majority of the work will consist of direct-response social advertisements, including formats such as:
UGC-style ads
Founder/customer stories
Testimonial ads
Problem/solution ads
Advertorial-style videos
Authority-based ads
Demonstration ads
Comparison ads
Story-driven advertisements
Native-style social ads
Longer 2–3 minute direct-response ads
Shorter hook variations
Iterations of existing winning advertisements
Not every advertisement needs to look highly produced.
Sometimes the strongest creative may intentionally look like an organic phone video, customer testimonial, news clip, podcast, interview, slideshow, or social post.
You need to understand the difference between good editing and over-editing.
Finding Footage
You will not always be given every clip needed for an advertisement.
You should be comfortable sourcing or creating appropriate supporting visuals using:
Our branded footage
Stock footage
Customer-style footage
AI-generated images
AI-generated video
Screenshots
Reviews
Social media-style content
Product footage
Graphics
Other relevant assets
You should be resourceful.
If the script talks about something specific, we expect you to figure out what the viewer should see during that section rather than requiring us to select every individual clip for you.
AI Tools
Experience with AI creative tools is highly valuable.
This may include:
ChatGPT
Sora
Higgsfield
Veo
Kling
Runway
Midjourney
Gemini / Nano Banana
ElevenLabs
Other AI image/video generation tools
You do not need to use every tool listed.
We care about your ability to use modern tools to make better advertisements and solve creative problems quickly.
Editing Software
You may use whichever professional editing software allows you to produce the best work, including:
Adobe Premiere Pro
After Effects
DaVinci Resolve
CapCut
Final Cut Pro
Other professional editing software
The software itself does not matter.
The quality of the final advertisement does.
What We're Looking For
You should have:
Strong direct-response video editing experience
Strong understanding of Meta/Facebook advertising
Excellent sense of pacing
Strong visual storytelling instincts
Understanding of viewer retention
Ability to identify strong supporting footage
Strong judgment around clip duration
Understanding of hooks and pattern interrupts
Strong subtitle and text-overlay design
Good sound design
Strong attention to detail
Ability to follow scripts accurately
Ability to follow creative briefs
Ability to replicate the general editing principles of reference advertisements without simply copying them
Ability to work independently
Fast turnaround times
Reliable communication
Ability to take feedback and implement it correctly
Ability to produce a consistent volume of advertisements every week
Experience editing for DTC/e-commerce brands spending significant amounts on Meta advertising is strongly preferred.
What We Do NOT Want
Please do not apply if your editing process is essentially:
Add voiceover
Add random stock clips
Add captions
Add music
Export
That is not what we consider direct-response editing.
We need someone who thinks about the advertisement scene by scene and understands why each visual is being shown.
Attention to Detail Matters
Before delivering an advertisement, you should be checking:
Spelling
Subtitle accuracy
Audio levels
Music levels
Voice clarity
Clip resolution
Aspect ratio
Visual consistency
Awkward cuts
Repetitive footage
Unnecessary dead time
Branding
Product accuracy
Transitions
Overall pacing
The video should arrive ready to run as a paid advertisement.
Position
Full-Time / Long-Term
We are looking for someone who can become a long-term member of our creative team.
We continuously produce and test new advertisements, hooks, creative formats, stories, concepts, and iterations.
Editors who demonstrate strong creative judgment and consistently contribute to winning advertisements will have significant room to grow with us.
How To Apply
Your application should include:
Your video editing portfolio
At least 3 direct-response advertisements you personally edited
Your best-performing advertisements, if available
Any proof of advertisements you edited reaching $10,000+ in spend at a 2.0+ ROAS
A brief explanation of what YOU were responsible for on those advertisements
The editing software you use
The AI tools you currently use
Your experience editing Meta/Facebook advertisements
Please prioritize actual advertisements over cinematic reels, music videos, or traditional corporate editing examples.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to complete a paid trial advertisement.
The trial will be used to evaluate your editing quality, visual judgment, pacing, ability to choose appropriate footage, ability to follow direction, attention to detail, and turnaround time.
