Architectural Stone CAD Drafter & Estimator
Confidential employer
Position: Architectural Stone CAD Drafter & Estimator
We are seeking an experienced CAD drafter and estimator who can transform architectural plans, designer renderings, elevations, and field measurements into accurate, fabrication-ready shop drawings for natural stone projects.
The ideal candidate understands natural stone slabs, wall cladding, flooring, countertops, large-format panels, fireplaces, exterior façades, and custom architectural stonework.
Primary Responsibilities
- Review architectural plans, designer renderings, specifications, and field measurements.
- Create detailed 2D and 3D shop drawings for client approval and fabrication.
- Develop elevations, sections, details, dimensions, joint locations, anchoring details, and installation layouts.
- Prepare slab-layout drawings showing how each piece will be cut from full slabs.
- Determine the number of slabs required for each project.
- Create accurate material takeoffs, cut lists, piece schedules, and square-foot quantities.
- Optimize slab usage to reduce waste while maintaining proper color and vein continuity.
- Lay out book-matched, vein-matched, and sequentially installed stone when required.
- Identify missing dimensions, conflicts, and constructability issues before fabrication.
- Coordinate drawing revisions with designers, architects, estimators, fabricators, and installers.
- Maintain organized drawing files, revision records, and project documentation.
- Assist the estimating department with labor, material, waste, and fabrication requirements.
Required Experience
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD.
- Experience with SketchUp, Revit, Rhino, SolidWorks, or another 3D modeling platform.
- Previous drafting or estimating experience in natural stone, tile, countertops, architectural cladding, millwork, metal fabrication, glazing, or a similar fabrication industry.
- Ability to read architectural and structural plans.
- Strong understanding of dimensions, tolerances, joints, substrates, installation conditions, and fabrication limitations.
- Ability to calculate square footage, linear footage, piece quantities, slab requirements, and waste factors.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience creating natural-stone shop drawings and slab-cutting layouts.
- Experience with Slabsmith, Moraware, AlphaCAM, EasySTONE, or similar stone-industry software.
- Knowledge of marble, granite, quartzite, limestone, travertine, and thin natural stone veneer.
- Understanding of vein direction, slab sequencing, book matching, dry layouts, and material variation.
- Experience creating CNC-ready information is a plus.
- Familiarity with exterior cladding, mechanical fastening, adhered veneer, and large-format stone installation is highly desirable.
Required Work Samples
Applicants must provide examples of:
- AutoCAD shop drawings
- Architectural elevations and details
- Slab layouts or cutting diagrams
- Material takeoffs or cut lists
- Relevant 3D models or renderings
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who combines drafting ability with practical fabrication and estimating knowledge. This person should understand not only how to draw the project, but also how the stone will be selected, cut, matched, fabricated, delivered, and installed.
