About the Role

Overview

We are looking for an experienced and commercially focused Garment Designer to collaborate with us on the design and development of our high-performance workwear and corporate clothing collections, on an independent contractor basis.

This role requires deep expertise in technical garment construction, fabric performance, durability, and compliance standards, ensuring products meet the practical demands of end users across multiple industries.

You will play a key role in driving innovation, improving product performance, and delivering commercially successful ranges aligned with customer and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

Design & Product Development

  • Collaborate and lead the design and development of workwear, uniforms, and personal protective clothing from concept through to production.
  • Create functional, durable, and ergonomic designs suited to real working environments.
  • Work with the 'in house' Garment Technologist to develop detailed technical packs.
  • Ensure product designs are able to meet performance requirements (e.g. durability, washability, comfort, mobility)

Compliance & Technical Standards

  • Design in line with relevant industry standards and regulations (e.g. PPE regulations, ISO standards, EN certifications where applicable)
  • Work with Garment Technologist to ensure garments meet required safety, visibility, and performance criteria.
  • Work closely with compliance teams to integrate testing and certification requirements into product development.

Fabric & Materials Expertise

  • Select and develop performance fabrics and trims suitable for workwear environments.
  • Consider factors such as abrasion resistance, breathability, stretch and weather protection.
  • Support the Garment Technologist in identifying sustainable, innovative and environmentally conscious materials.

Commercial & Customer Focus

  • Translate customer needs, wearer feedback, and industry requirements into practical design solutions.
  • Balance creative design with cost targets, margins, and realistic manufacturability.
  • Work on bespoke product development and collaborate with internal and external partners to create practical and innovative workwear.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Close collaboration with the Managing Director and Garment Technologist throughout the development process.
  • Collaborate with customers and the sales team on tailored solutions.
  • Present product concepts and collections to internal teams and external stakeholders.

Skills & Experience Required

  • 5 plus years’ experience in a senior garment design role within workwear, PPE, or performance apparel
  • Strong understanding of technical garment construction and pattern development.
  • Proven experience designing for functionality, durability, and safety.
  • Proficiency in the use of design tools and AI technologies.
  • Experience working with UK and/or international manufacturers and suppliers
  • Strong knowledge of compliance standards (e.g. EN ISO, PPE regulations)
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications and technical briefs.

Desirable Experience

  • Background in workwear uniforms, high-visibility clothing and protective wear.
  • Knowledge of sustainable materials and certifications (e.g. GRS, recycled fabrics)
  • Experience with PLM systems and product lifecycle management.
  • Exposure to bespoke or contract workwear projects.
