US Tax & Accounting Manager (CPA) - Lead a Small Team
Confidential employer
About Us
We're a growing CPA firm that serves individuals, small businesses, nonprofits, physicians, contractors, and real estate owners across the US with tax preparation, planning, bookkeeping, payroll, compilations, and advisory work.
We hire and pay you directly. You are not being placed through an agency, your pay is not being marked up by a middleman, and you will work with the firm owner every week. We are looking for one person to grow with us for years, not to fill a seat for one tax season.
The Role
You will lead our production team: currently 3 accountants, working alongside our executive VA. The team is growing, and you would be the person we grow it around.
This is a review-and-manage role, not simply a preparer role.
Day to day:
- Prepare and review individual and business returns (1040, 1120, 1120-S, 1065) prepared by our staff - catch what's wrong before it reaches the partner, and give feedback that makes people better
- Delegate and track work across three (soon more) team members so nothing sits idle and nothing gets missed near a deadline
- Train and coach junior preparers and bookkeepers on US tax rules, firm procedures, and software
- Oversee monthly bookkeeping and reconciliations, and review our bookkeepers' work
- Support payroll processing and payroll tax filings (941, 940, W-2, 1099, state registrations and returns)
- Handle tax resolution: IRS and state notices, transcript analysis, penalty abatement, installment agreements, back-year filings
- Prepare and review compilation-level financial statements
- Build and improve our checklists, templates, and workflows so the firm runs the same way every time
Note: This role handles client communication in writing - email and messaging. You will not be doing client calls or video meetings. Your written English needs to be excellent.
What You Must Have
- Philippine CPA
- 6+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years focused on US taxation - individual and business returns
- Real review experience: you have reviewed other people's returns and given feedback, not only prepared your own
- Experience supervising, training, or coaching at least one other person
- Strong knowledge of US federal and multi-state tax compliance
- Solid US bookkeeping and payroll experience
- Excellent written English - you will be writing to US clients directly
- Reliable high-speed internet, a backup connection, and a quiet home workspace
- Comfortable working US Eastern hours
Strongly Preferred
- Experience with Intuit ProConnect, QuickBooks Online, and TaxDome
- Experience with ADP or similar payroll platforms
- Prior experience working directly for a US-based CPA firm (not through an agency or BPO)
- US Enrolled Agent or US CPA - not required, but we pay a premium for it
- Exposure to entity formation, S-corp elections, real estate, or nonprofit (Form 990) returns
Who Actually Succeeds Here
- You are organized to the point that other people rely on your system, not just your memory
- You write clearly enough that a client never has to ask a follow-up question
- You would rather ask one clarifying question up front than redo the work later
- You are comfortable telling a junior their return is wrong, and comfortable telling the partner when something doesn't look right
- You flag problems early instead of hoping they resolve
- You want to build something over the next five years
How to Apply
Please do not send a generic application. Applications missing the items below will not be reviewed.
Answer these four questions in your message:
- How many US tax returns have you personally reviewed (not prepared) in the last two years, and what types?
- Describe one IRS or state notice you resolved start to finish. What was the issue and what did you do?
- Which tax and bookkeeping software have you used, and for how long with each?
- What is your current or most recent monthly rate, and what are you targeting?
Record a 2–3 minute video (unlisted YouTube or Loom link) introducing yourself and explaining how you would handle this situation: it is April 8, three returns are due, one preparer is out sick, and a client just email ed asking why their refund is smaller than last year. Walk us through what you do first.
Write a short reply to this client email (5–8 sentences, in your own words - this is how we assess your written English and judgment): "Hi - I just got a letter from the IRS saying I owe $4,300 for 2024 plus penalties. I thought you guys filed everything correctly. I'm honestly pretty upset. What happened and what do I do now?"
We review applications weekly and reply to everyone who follows the instructions above.
