Senior Full-Stack Developer — Laravel / API Integrations / BigBlueButton

We are a large Australian education company providing online and in-home tutoring to K–12 students.

We operate on our own custom platform that manages students, families, tutors, lessons, payments and operations. Our core application is built in PHP/Laravel.

We are now looking for an experienced developer to take ownership of a major new project: building a deeply integrated online classroom experience.

The Project:

We currently use BigBlueButton (BBB) for thousands of online tutoring lessons. BBB works well as the underlying classroom technology, but our current implementation is relatively basic and feels separate from the rest of our platform.

We want to change that.

Our goal is to build a deeply integrated, fully branded online classroom experience powered by BigBlueButton.

We do NOT want to build our own video conferencing technology. Instead, we want to use BBB for video, audio, screen sharing, whiteboards, presentations and other classroom functionality, while our platform owns the surrounding experience, integrations, resources and data.

Phase 1

Our first objective is to:

Remove Greenlight from the normal tutor/student experience
Integrate BigBlueButton directly with our Laravel application
Automatically create a unique BBB meeting for every scheduled online lesson
Allow tutors to click Enter Classroom directly from their dashboard
Allow students/families to do the same
Handle authentication and participant roles automatically
Create an Instant Classroom feature for tutors who need an unscheduled classroom
Customize BBB so it looks and feels like part of our platform
Connect each BBB meeting to the corresponding lesson in our database
Capture attendance, join/leave times, meeting duration and other available meeting data
Return this data to our Laravel application after each lesson
Build the integration in a reliable and scalable way

From the tutor/student perspective, they should simply feel like they are entering another part of our platform.

They shouldn't need to know that BigBlueButton is powering it.

Where We Want to Take It

Phase 1 is only the foundation.

Once the classroom is deeply integrated with our platform, we want to explore features including:

Lesson transcription
AI-generated lesson summaries
Parent-friendly lesson reports
Automatic extraction of topics covered
Homework and next-step extraction
AI lesson recommendations
Teaching resources available from within the classroom
Previous lesson information available to tutors
Student learning profiles
Curriculum mastery tracking
Tutor analytics and coaching
Student engagement analytics

We want every online lesson to eventually produce useful structured information for the tutor, parent, student and our internal platform.

Who We're Looking For

This isn't a role where we will provide you with a list of tickets and tell you exactly how to implement them.

We are looking for someone who can take technical ownership of this project.

You should be comfortable being given a desired outcome, researching the available technology, proposing an approach, building it and improving it over time.

Required Skills

You should have strong experience with:

PHP
Laravel
REST APIs and third-party integrations
MySQL/database design
JavaScript/TypeScript
Git
Linux/server environments
Webhooks and event-driven integrations
Debugging complex integrations
Reading technical documentation and independently learning unfamiliar systems

You should also be comfortable working across the boundary between backend and frontend development when required.

Previous BigBlueButton experience is NOT required, but will naturally be advantageous.

Forecasting a 6 month project, with potential for permanent work.
