Full-Stack Developer (Platforms, Web and LMS)

About the Role
We have several platforms in build and we need developers to help finish them, while keeping our existing websites and learning management systems running well.

This is a genuinely full-stack role across two areas of work: our internal platforms, built in TypeScript, and our public web and LMS estate, built in PHP. You will move between them.

Current platform projects include a multi-entity document and records management system, an internal audit and self-assurance platform, a recognition-of-prior-learning engine, and a workforce management system. These are compliance systems. They hold student, participant and worker records, and they are examined by regulators. Correctness matters more than speed, and you will be expected to say so when the two conflict.

Key responsibilities
Platform development: TypeScript

• Build and complete features in existing TypeScript applications: data models, server-side logic, and the interfaces people actually use.
• Design and evolve PostgreSQL schemas, and write the migrations that change them safely against live data.
• Write automated tests for the behaviour that matters, including access-control and data-integrity rules.
• Work in containerised environments and keep them reproducible.
• Integrate with third-party systems over REST APIs.

Web and learning management: PHP

• Build and maintain WordPress sites: custom themes, plugins and integrations.
• Turn designs and wireframes into working, accessible front-ends.
• Develop, customise and maintain Moodle plugins, themes and core functionality.
• Integrate Moodle with other systems via REST and SOAP web services.
• Apply updates and patches, maintain backups, and test that restores actually work.
• Improve site performance, technical SEO and Core Web Vitals.

Across the role

• Diagnose and resolve performance, functional and usability problems.
• Review other people's code, and have your own reviewed.
• Contribute to planning, estimation and documentation.
• Provide technical guidance to non-technical colleagues, and write the documentation they need

Essential requirements

• Three or more years building and maintaining production web applications.
• Strong JavaScript / TypeScript and strong PHP. This role needs both.
• Production experience with React. We use Next.js; adjacent framework experience is acceptable if you are willing to learn it properly.
• Production experience with WordPress and Moodle.
• Solid SQL and relational data modelling, across PostgreSQL and MySQL.
• Comfortable with Git and Docker.
• Clear written and spoken English. You will be documenting decisions, not only code.
• Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent demonstrable experience.

Desirable

• Prisma, NestJS, Node.js backend services, Python / FastAPI.
• Experience with regulated or audited systems - education, healthcare, finance.
• Identity and access management (OIDC, Keycloak) and object storage (S3, MinIO).
• eSkilled, Totara or another Moodle distribution.
• Accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2) and technical SEO.
• Experience with an Australian RTO, a UK awarding body, or another regulated training environment.
