About the Role

Bookkeeper – Australian Barber Shop

About the role

We are a small Australian barber shop looking for an experienced bookkeeper to manage our monthly bookkeeping, reconciliation and Australian tax reporting requirements.

This is a small ongoing role of approximately 3-4 hours per month, or more at the end of each Qtr..

We are looking for someone with strong practical experience working with Australian businesses and a detailed understanding of Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements, GST, BAS, PAYG and superannuation.

The main purpose of the role is to ensure our accounts are fully reconciled each month, our financial records are accurate and all information required for our Australian tax and ATO reporting is correctly prepared and ready for lodgement.
The business owner will review and lodge the BAS.

Key responsibilities

  • Complete monthly bank and account reconciliations
  • Review all transactions for accuracy and correct allocation
  • Ensure Xero is fully reconciled and up to date
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies, errors or unusual transactions
  • Maintain accurate bookkeeping records
  • Prepare monthly financial reports
  • Prepare all information required for BAS and GST reporting
  • Calculate and reconcile GST figures
  • Prepare information required for PAYG reporting
  • Ensure superannuation-related transactions are correctly recorded
  • Maintain receipts, invoices and supporting documentation through Hubdoc
  • Ensure Xero and Hubdoc records are complete and accurate
  • Review the accounts before each BAS period and flag any issues requiring attention
  • Provide the business owner with the completed BAS figures and supporting information for review and lodgement
  • Liaise with the business owner regarding any discrepancies or information required
  • Work with our Australian accountant/tax adviser where required

Australian tax and ATO knowledge

Strong practical knowledge of Australian bookkeeping and taxation requirements is essential.

Applicants should have demonstrated experience working with Australian businesses and be confident with:

  • Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements
  • GST
  • BAS preparation
  • PAYG withholding
  • Superannuation
  • Australian bookkeeping practices
  • Australian small-business tax and compliance requirements

Applicants should be able to independently reconcile the accounts and prepare accurate BAS information for the business owner to review and lodge.

Software experience
Highly proficient experience with Xero and Hubdoc is essential.
You should be comfortable working independently within both systems and able to quickly identify and resolve discrepancies.

Payroll knowledge
Payroll processing is not part of the current role.
However, strong knowledge of Australian payroll is highly desirable.

The ideal candidate
We are looking for someone who is:

  • Highly experienced in Australian bookkeeping
  • Very familiar with Australian tax and ATO requirements
  • Extremely accurate and detail-oriented
  • Highly proficient in Xero and Hubdoc
  • Comfortable working independently
  • Reliable and able to meet monthly deadlines
  • Proactive in identifying errors and discrepancies
  • Comfortable communicating directly with the business owner
  • Trustworthy and respectful of confidential financial information

Because this is only approx 3 hours of work each month, we are looking for someone who can work efficiently and independently without requiring ongoing supervision.

We are not looking for someone to simply enter transactions. We want someone who understands Australian bookkeeping and tax requirements, can review the accounts critically and can confidently tell us if something does not look right.
