Australian-Experienced Xero Bookkeeper / Accountant – E-commerce

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are a Melbourne-based online retail business looking for an experienced Bookkeeper / Accountant with strong hands-on experience working with Australian businesses.

This will initially be a project-based role focused on cleaning up approximately 18 months of historical accounting records, transferring the records from Excel into Xero, completing reconciliations and leaving us with an accurate and properly structured accounting system.

Once the historical project is completed successfully, there is an opportunity for ongoing bookkeeping work.

Our sales are primarily through Amazon, eBay and direct online sales, so experience with e-commerce and inventory-based businesses would be highly regarded.

YOUR PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Set up and/or properly configure our Xero account
• Transfer approximately 18 months of historical accounting records from Excel into Xero
• Record and reconcile Amazon, eBay and direct sales
• Record supplier purchases, overseas imports and other business expenses
• Complete bank reconciliations across multiple bank accounts
• Review GST treatment and correctly classify transactions
• Identify missing, duplicated or incorrectly recorded transactions
• Review and reconcile accounts to ensure historical records are accurate
• Assist with inventory and stock-related accounting
• Ensure Xero is fully up to date after the historical cleanup
• Prepare Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet and other relevant financial reports
• Help provide product-level and business performance information where the available data allows
• Establish a clean bookkeeping process that can be maintained going forward

ONGOING OPPORTUNITY

After successful completion of the initial project, the role may continue with responsibilities such as:

Regular bookkeeping
Bank reconciliation
Sales and expense reconciliation
GST/BAS-related bookkeeping preparation
Maintaining Xero accurately and up to date
Monthly financial reporting
Supporting management with financial information when required

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

• Previous hands-on experience working with Australian businesses is MANDATORY.

You must have:

• Strong hands-on Xero experience
• Good working knowledge of Australian GST and BAS requirements
• Strong bank reconciliation experience
• Experience with historical bookkeeping cleanup, catch-up bookkeeping or migration projects
• Experience connecting and reconciling bank accounts in Xero
• Good Excel skills
• Strong attention to detail
• Ability to identify accounting discrepancies rather than simply enter data
• Good written and spoken English
• Reliable internet connection and communication

We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the historical cleanup, identify problems, ask the right questions and leave us with accurate and reliable accounts, not someone who only performs basic data entry.

This is initially a project-based engagement, with a genuine opportunity to become our ongoing bookkeeper if the initial project is completed successfully.
