SEO content and topical authority assistant
Confidential employer
We are looking for a reliable SEO content specialist to support a growing portfolio of UK businesses across several different industries.
This is not a role for someone who simply generates articles using ChatGPT and sends them over.
We already use AI extensively.
What we need is someone who can think.
You should understand why a page exists, what somebody is searching for, how that page fits into the wider website, what supporting content should surround it, and how to make the finished content sound like the actual business rather than generic AI-generated copy.
This will initially be a part-time position with the potential to grow significantly for the right person.
What you will be doing
Your work will include:
- Researching topics and search intent before writing
- Reviewing Google search results and competitor content
- Creating SEO content briefs
- Identifying content clusters and supporting article opportunities
- Writing service pages, location pages, landing pages and articles
- Creating internal linking recommendations
- Identifying relevant entities, subtopics and FAQs
- Following an existing keyword strategy where provided
- Helping expand broad keywords into useful topical clusters
- Matching the tone of voice of completely different client brands
- Updating and improving existing content
- Structuring articles properly using headings and logical information hierarchy
- Using AI to accelerate your work without allowing AI to replace your judgement
- Fact checking anything generated with AI before submitting it
You will not initially be responsible for uploading content into WordPress.
Your responsibility is creating high-quality content and recommendations that are ready for our team to review and publish.
What good work looks like
If we give you a plumbing company, SaaS company and professional services business, the content should not sound like it came from the same writer or prompt.
Before writing an article, you should naturally be asking questions such as:
What is the actual search intent?
What pages already exist on the website?
What should this page link to?
What pages should link back to this page?
Is this a standalone topic or part of a larger cluster?
What information is competitors consistently covering?
What are competitors missing?
Does this article genuinely deserve to rank?
Could somebody tell that AI helped produce this?
If your process is simply keyword + prompt + 1,500-word article, this role will not be a good fit.
Skills we are looking for
You should have experience with several of the following:
- SEO content writing
- Search intent analysis
- Keyword research
- Topic clustering
- Topical authority
- Content briefs
- Content optimisation
- Internal linking
- Competitor research
- SERP analysis
- Google Search Console
- Ahrefs, Semrush or similar SEO tools
- WordPress
- ChatGPT, Claude or similar AI tools
You do not need to know everything.
Strong thinking, attention to detail and reliability matter more to us than having every SEO certification available.
Using AI
We actively encourage the use of AI.
However, there is a major difference between using AI as a tool and submitting AI-generated content without thinking.
AI can help you research, organise, expand, draft and edit.
You are still responsible for:
- Accuracy
- Originality
- Search intent
- Structure
- Brand voice
- Relevance
- Quality
We will reject generic AI content.
Working arrangement
This is initially a part-time remote position.
Starting budget:
$200 to $300 USD per month depending on experience, availability and output.
We care more about consistent high-quality output than tracking every minute you work.
If you become someone we can trust across client accounts, there is substantial scope for the role, responsibilities and compensation to increase.
We are looking for someone interested in becoming part of the way we operate rather than somebody looking to churn through another freelance writing gig.
How to apply
Please do not send a generic application.
Start your application with the words:
Purple Penguin
Applications without those words will be ignored.
Then answer the following five questions.
1. Show us your work
Send links to two pieces of SEO content you personally created.
For each one, briefly explain:
- What keyword or topic you targeted
- What the search intent was
- What you personally did
- Why you structured the content the way you did
2. Show us how you think about clusters
Imagine you are working with a UK plumber who wants to rank for:
boiler installation
Give us:
- The primary page you would create
- Five supporting content ideas
- Two related commercial pages
- How you would internally link these pages together
Keep this concise.
3. Tell us how you use AI
Explain exactly how you currently use ChatGPT, Claude or another AI tool when creating SEO content.
We are not looking for somebody who claims they never use AI.
We want to understand your process.
4. Spot the problem
Tell us why the following approach is weak:
"Find a keyword with good volume, ask ChatGPT to write a 2,000-word SEO article about it, add the keyword to the title and headings, then publish it."
Your answer should be no more than 150 words.
5. Tell us about you
Include:
- Your current availability
- Your expected monthly salary
- Your timezone
- How many clients or employers you currently work with
- The SEO tools you have previously used
Finally, at the bottom of your application, tell us your favourite food.
This is simply to confirm you have read the entire job description.
Important
Please do not apply if:
- You submit completely AI-generated applications
- You cannot demonstrate previous writing
- You frequently miss deadlines
- You need detailed instructions for every small task
- You consider SEO writing to mean putting keywords into an article repeatedly
- You are applying for dozens of unrelated VA jobs at the same time
We are happy to teach our processes.
We cannot teach care, curiosity or reliability.
If you are someone who enjoys understanding why content performs rather than simply producing more words, we would like to hear from you.
