About the Role

Position: Proofreader / Fact-Checker
About us
Arch of the High Sierras is a fifteen-year-old family business located in Reno, Nevada. We specialize in making a wide variety of quality wall calendars. While our calendars serve a practical purpose, we hope that they also bring some beauty, inspiration, and laughter into people’s lives.

We’re currently building our 2028 line and expect to produce about 1,000 unique calendar titles across a wide range of subjects, including nature, travel, pets, and inspiration.

We're seeking a detail-oriented full-time Proofreader/Fact-Checker to verify image information and polish calendars before sending files to our printer. This is a remote position, 40 hours per week, with a salary commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities
Fact-checking

  • Verify the accuracy of photographer-supplied location information and animal species (both common and scientific names) for stock images from companies such as Alamy and DepositPhotos.
  • Use online reference tools and search engines (including AI tools) to confirm:

City, region, and country for travel and nature images.
Correct common and scientific names for wildlife images.
Ensure species names follow CMOS style (for example, capitalization, italics, and ordering of common vs. scientific name).

  • Flag any images where the location or species seems incorrect or uncertain, and add notes or reference links for our team to review.

-Follow our captioning style and update captions as needed for clarity and consistency.

Proofreading
-Proofread calendar pages (covers, monthly grids, back covers) for:

  • Spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Consistency of style, terminology, and capitalization across related calendars.
  • A quick visual review to ensure dates and holidays appear correct (we work from vetted templates, so you only need to flag anything that looks obviously wrong or out of place).
  • Color accuracy and coordination, including checking that each month’s color palette matches and complements that month’s image.
  • Record all edits clearly for our graphic designers using comments in Google Sheets.
  • Collaborate with the in-house editing team and graphic designers to follow existing voice and style guidelines.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a proofreader, copy editor, or fact-checker, ideally in publishing, marketing, or educational content.
  • Excellent command of written English, strong editorial judgment, and fluent English communication skills for working with a global team.
  • High accuracy and attention to detail, including the ability to review your own work to correct typos and confirm that requested edits have been made.
  • Strong online research skills and familiarity with reliable sources for geography and animals.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects at once, and meet daily deadlines.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain consistency across many related projects.
  • Critical thinker who can choose the best approach or solution for each project.
  • Team player who communicates proactively and collaborates well with remote colleagues.
  • Comfortable working in tools such as Slack, Toggl, Google Sheets & Docs, and PDFs.
  • Willingness to use AI-assisted research tools for initial lookups (training and process guidelines provided).

Nice to have

  • Background or strong interest in geography, travel, animals, or nature photography.
  • Experience working with stock image companies (for example, Alamy, Depositphotos).
  • Prior experience with calendar or book production.

Compensation and schedule

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week.
  • A 4-hour overlap with U.S. business hours is required; the standard start time is 5:00 a.m. Philippine time, with some flexibility by agreement.
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • Remote role; strong, reliable internet and contingency plans for both connectivity and electricity are required.

How to apply
Please include:

  • A brief introduction explaining your proofreading and/or fact-checking experience.
  • Examples of relevant work (or a short portfolio).
  • Your CV.
  • Your current location and typical working hours.

Selection process

  • After reviewing your CV and portfolio, if we’d like to proceed with the interview process, we’ll send you a few trial tasks. This practical step is designed to give you an idea of the scope of work and help us evaluate your approach to determine if it fits our team’s needs.
  • If selected to continue, you’ll have a video interview with two staff members.
