Freelance Interior Designer – Airbnb / Serviced Accommodation
About Us
Valstays is a growing UK serviced accommodation management company. We manage Airbnb and short-let properties on behalf of landlords and help take properties from empty or partially furnished homes to fully furnished, guest-ready accommodation.
As we continue to grow, we're looking for a talented remote Interior Designer to work with us on a long-term freelance basis.
This is not a full-time position. You will be paid per project completed, with approximately 3–5 projects available on average per month
The Role:
For each new property, you will be responsible for creating a complete furnishing and shopping list using an existing Valstays Google Sheets template.
We will provide you with:
- Photos and videos of the property
- Room measurements and/or floor plans
- A total furnishing budget in GBP
- Our existing Google Sheets template
- Any furniture already inside the property that we're keeping
- A design brief and, where applicable, a feature colour/colour scheme
- Valstays SOPs explaining how we expect our properties to be furnished
Your job is to turn this information into a complete, cohesive furnishing package that is ready for our team to order.
Your Responsibilities:
You will source suitable furniture, furnishings and décor for each room while remaining within the agreed budget.
This can include:
- Beds and mattresses
- Bedside tables
- Sofas
- Dining furniture
- Coffee and side tables
- TVs and TV units
- Desks and chairs
- Mirrors
- Rugs
- Artwork
- Lamps and lighting
- Curtains
- Cushions and throws
- Plants and decorative accessories
- Kitchen items
- Other furnishings required to make the property guest-ready
You will add the product, price, quantity and direct purchasing link to our existing Google Sheets template.
Everything selected throughout the property should complement each other and follow a consistent design style.
Where You'll Source Products
The majority of products will need to be available for delivery within the UK.
You'll primarily source from websites such as:
- Amazon UK
- Wayfair
- Debenhams
- Dunelm
- Ufurnish
and other reputable UK retailers.
You should also be comfortable finding better alternatives from other reliable suppliers when appropriate.
Designing for Airbnb
This is extremely important.
You're not designing someone's personal home. You're designing properties that need to perform commercially as short-term accommodation.
Our properties need to:
- Look fantastic in professional Airbnb photography
- Have a clear and consistent design theme
- Stand out against competing properties
- Feel premium without unnecessarily overspending
- Use durable furniture suitable for frequent guest use
- Be practical and comfortable
- Appeal to a broad range of guests
We want someone who understands how to make a property look considerably more expensive than the actual furnishing budget.
Budget Management
Every project will have a different budget.
You must be confident designing within strict budgets and keeping track of the total cost throughout the project.
For example, you may be given:
"4-bedroom house – £7,500 total budget – grey property with navy feature walls."
You would then design the complete furnishing package around those requirements without exceeding the agreed budget.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who has:
- Professional interior design experience
- A strong eye for colour, proportion and styling
- Excellent furniture and décor sourcing skills
- Experience working with budgets
- Strong attention to detail
- Experience using Google Sheets or Excel
- The ability to interpret room measurements and floor plans
- Good written English
- Reliable communication
- The ability to meet agreed deadlines
- Experience designing residential or hospitality properties
Experience designing Airbnb, serviced accommodation, hotels or other short-term rental properties would be a major advantage.
Ongoing Work
We're not looking for someone for a single project.
We're looking to build a long-term relationship with the right designer as Valstays continues to grow.
Initially, we'll provide more guidance around our preferred designs and styles. As you become familiar with the Valstays style and our SOPs, we'd like you to become increasingly independent with each project.
Our ideal working relationship is eventually being able to send you a property, floor plan, budget and colour scheme and have you return a complete, well-designed furnishing package ready for our team to order.
How to Apply
Please send us:
A short introduction about yourself and your interior design experience.
Your interior design portfolio, ideally including residential, Airbnb, serviced accommodation or hospitality projects.
Examples of any mood boards, furniture schedules or shopping lists you've previously created.
Your proposed price per project.
Your typical turnaround time for a furnishing project.
How many projects you could comfortably complete for us each month.
Details of your experience sourcing furniture and décor online.
Please start your application with the words "VALSTAYS DESIGN" so we know you've read the full job description.
Shortlisted applicants may be given a small paid test project before we begin working together.
We look forward to hearing from you!
