About the role
We are seeking an experienced Senior External Auditor to support our audit engagements on a freelance basis. This role is ideal for someone who is confident running an audit from planning through to completion, communicates clearly, and enjoys working independently. This is a contract role with no fixed hours - ideal for someone who wants autonomy, flexibility, and the ability to balance other commitments or client work. You’ll work directly with the Audit Partner and take ownership of key audit areas, ensuring high quality, compliant, and well documented work.
What you’ll be doing
- You will take ownership of assigned audit engagements, including elements of the planning phase, walkthroughs of key cycles, risk assessment, and execution of fieldwork. The work is fully remote, and you will be provided access to our audit software.
- Lead audit fieldwork for a range of NZ entities (Not For Profit, small–medium commercial, charities)
- Prepare workpapers to a high standard, ensuring clear audit trails
- Perform risk assessment procedures and substantive testing
- Draft audit findings and assist with management letter points
- Plan and execute work in audit files in Audit Assistant
Key Responsibilities
- Lead audit engagements from planning to completion
- Perform walkthroughs and document key processes and controls
- Conduct audit risk assessments and identify key areas of focus
- Execute fieldwork across core financial statement areas (debtors, creditors, fixed assets, bank, etc.)
- Prepare clear, well structured audit documentation and findings
- Communicate proactively and professionally throughout the engagement
What you’ll bring
- Clear communicator
- At least 3+ years external audit experience (Big 4 or mid tier advantageous)
- Strong understanding of auditing standards and accounting frameworks
- Ability to work independently and deliver high quality work without supervision
- Excellent documentation discipline and consistency
- Accounting qualification or working towards
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks
- Comfortable working independently and meeting deadlines
- Experience with Xero is an advantage (All of our clients use Xero)
- This is not an internal audit or IT audit role
