About the Role

Tax Professional / Bookkeeper (CPA Preferred) — Personal Injury Law Firm

Crooks Law Firm | [Location / Remote] | [Full-Time / Part-Time] |

About the Role

Crooks Law Firm, a growing personal injury practice, is looking for an experienced Tax Professional / Bookkeeper to own the firm's books, tax compliance, and financial reporting. This role keeps the financial engine of the firm running: day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll, trust accounting, tax preparation and planning, and clean monthly reports the owner can make decisions with.

The right candidate is meticulous, discreet, and comfortable being the sole finance person in a busy law office. A CPA or EA is strongly preferred, and law-firm experience — especially trust/IOLTA accounting — will move you to the top of the pile.

What You'll Do
Maintain the firm's books end to end: chart of accounts, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close (QuickBooks or similar)
Manage trust/IOLTA accounting: client trust ledgers, three-way reconciliations, settlement disbursements, and strict separation of client funds from operating funds
Track case costs and advances per matter so recoverable costs are captured at settlement
Run payroll for employees and contractors, including multi-rate and international/remote tea ---------- mbers; issue W-2s and 1099s
Prepare and file business and, as applicable, individual tax returns (federal and state); manage estimated tax payments and deadlines
Handle sales/local tax filings, business licenses, and annual state filings as required
Deliver monthly financial statements — P&L, balance sheet, cash flow — plus payroll and case-cost summaries
Support year-end tax planning: entity structure, deductions, retirement plan contributions, and quarterly strategy check-ins with the owner
Respond to any IRS or state notices and keep the firm audit-ready at all times
Required Qualifications
3+ years of bookkeeping and tax preparation experience for small businesses
Proficiency with QuickBooks (Online or Desktop) and Excel/Google Sheets
Hands-on experience preparing and filing business tax returns (Schedule C, 1120-S, or 1065) and payroll filings (941, 940, W-2, 1099)
Strong understanding of GAAP basics, reconciliations, and month-end close
Impeccable attention to detail and absolute discretion with confidential financial information
Excellent written English and responsive communication
Strongly Preferred
CPA license or EA (Enrolled Agent) credential
Law firm accounting experience — trust/IOLTA management is a major plus
Experience with contingency-fee practices (settlement statements, cost recovery, fee splits, lien payoffs)
Familiarity with legal case management or billing software (Filevine, Litify, CASEpeer, Clio)
Experience supporting a solo/small firm owner with personal + business tax planning
Why Join Us
Own the whole finance function — no bureaucracy, direct line to the firm owner
Growing firm with a collaborative pre-litigation and operations team
