Level 3 Senior Network Engineer (MSP) - Long Term, Work From Home
Curated from source
We are a 12-person managed services provider (MSP) in San Diego, California, and we are hiring one senior engineer in the Philippines. This is permanent, work-from-home, and we mean long-term - one of our engineers in India has been with us for 15 years and has flown out to visit us several times.
THE PERSON WE ARE ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR
We want the engineer we can hand anything to and then stop worrying about it.
Not the person who knows every product - nobody does. The person who, when something breaks that they have never seen before, does this:
- Finds out what is actually happening before touching anything. Reads the real error. Checks what changed. Does not start randomly restarting things and hoping.
- Narrows it down on purpose - rules things out one at a time instead of guessing.
- Owns it until it is finished. Does not hand a half-solved ticket back and say "still broken."
- Documents while the work is fresh, not a week later. Everything we figure out goes into Hudu, our knowledge base. When you write up how you solved something, the next engineer who hits that same problem - maybe at 2 AM, maybe a year from now - fixes it in ten minutes instead of burning three hours. That is the difference between a team that gets smarter every year and one that keeps solving the same problem forever. The best engineers here are the ones whose write-ups everybody else relies on.
- Says "I don't know yet - here is how I am going to find out." We respect that far more than a confident wrong answer.
- Knows the difference between "I should keep digging" and "I should ask for help now."
- Is genuinely curious. Takes the weird ticket because the weird ticket is interesting.
If you are the person your current team quietly forwards the nightmare tickets to, we want to talk to you.
WHAT WE RUN
ConnectWise, Kaseya, Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, Windows Server ---------- , Active Directory (on-prem and Entra), Exchange, Hyper-V and VMware, Sophos / SonicWall / Ubiquiti firewalls, L2 and L3 switching and VLANs, VPNs, DNS, Synology NAS, Acronis backup, Dell servers and iDRAC, Windows 10 and 11 workstations, and Hudu for documentation.
You will not know all of it. You should know most of it, and be able to learn the rest fast.
ABOUT US
We are completely virtual and we genuinely like each other. Whoever we add has to fit that:
- Good vibes
- Hard working
- Customer caring
- Friendly
- Open to suggestions, easy communication
- Most of us really love music and chat about fun things on our Microsoft Teams board
- Willing to share your technical opinion on how to fix something
THE SCHEDULE - PLEASE READ THIS TWICE
This is a full night shift in the Philippines. You will work United States Pacific business hours:
- 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM San Diego time, Monday through Friday.
- That is 11:00 PM to 8:00 AM Manila time during the US summer, and midnight to 9:00 AM Manila during the US winter. Our clocks shift by an hour twice a year, yours do not.
- We start every day with a 15-minute stand-up meeting on Microsoft Teams at 8:00 AM San Diego time. Everyone attends, and it is on camera. After that, you get your day to actually work - we do not sit on a video call all day.
We are not asking for a few hours of overlap. We are asking for your whole working day to be our working day. Please do not apply if that is going to make you miserable in six months - we are trying to hire someone for the next ten years, not the next ten weeks.
THE OTHER HONEST PARTS
- You must have genuinely reliable internet and a reliable computer, plus a real backup plan for when the power or the internet goes out. Clients depend on you.
- You must be comfortable on camera and speaking with American clients on the phone. Your English needs to be very good - spoken, not just written.
- Log your time on what you worked on. Every day.
PAY
2,200 to 3,200 USD per month, based on real technical depth and English. We pay at the top of that range for the right person, and we do not haggle over a few dollars with someone we intend to keep for a decade.
HOW TO APPLY - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY, THIS IS PART OF THE TEST
1. Put this exact format in your subject line:
L3 Engineer - [Your Name] - [the song you would put on while fixing a dead server at 2 AM]
2. Attach your resume.
3. Attach a voice recording of yourself - a WAV or MP3 file - reading these two questions out loud and then answering them:
- "Tell me about the hardest technical problem you ever solved, and how you figured it out."
- "What do you do when you are completely stuck?"
Two to three minutes is plenty. Please do not send a ZIP or RAR file, WAV or MP3 only. Applications without a voice recording will not be reviewed. We do this so that we do not waste your time or ours on a call that was never going to work.
4. Answer this in one line: can you work 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM San Diego time, five days a week, long term? Yes or no.
OUR PROCESS, SO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU STAND
Stage 1 - these questions and your voice recording.
Stage 2 - a skills conversation on Microsoft Teams, 30 to 90 minutes.
Stage 3 - a hands-on test in a live environment, and we pay you for your time on it.
Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom : )
