About the Role

Cold Caller / Sales Development Specialist

Team Lead Track

Remote | Full-Time | U.S. Business Hours

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced, high-performing Cold Caller and Sales Development Specialist who can take ownership of outbound sales conversations—from researching and contacting prospects to qualifying opportunities, nurturing leads, and securing qualified bookings, appointments, or onsite walkthroughs.

This is not an entry-level dialing role. We need an A-player who can think strategically, communicate confidently, handle objections, create genuine interest, and move qualified prospects toward a clear next step.

The right candidate must also be able to create, test, and improve sales scripts, assist with lead generation when calling lists are limited, and potentially train and lead other callers as the department grows.

Role Objective

The primary objective is to generate qualified sales opportunities by:

  • Reaching the appropriate decision-makers
  • Understanding the prospect’s current situation and needs
  • Identifying genuine problems or service opportunities
  • Properly qualifying the prospect
  • Creating enough interest to secure a booking, consultation, or walkthrough
  • Maintaining consistent follow-up until a clear outcome is reached
  • Supporting lead-generation efforts when additional prospects are needed

The focus is not simply on call volume. Success will be based on the quality of conversations, qualified opportunities created, appointments booked, appointment attendance, and the overall quality of the handoff to management.

Key Responsibilities

Cold Calling and Outbound Sales

  • Make consistent outbound calls to businesses and prospective clients.
  • Contact business owners, managers, directors, facility managers, office managers, and other relevant decision-makers.
  • Navigate receptionists, gatekeepers, and front-desk personnel professionally.
  • Introduce the company and its services clearly and confidently.
  • Create interest without sounding aggressive, robotic, or overly scripted.
  • Conduct natural and consultative sales conversations.
  • Ask strong discovery and qualification questions.
  • Identify operational challenges, service needs, contract timing, dissatisfaction, and buying motivation.
  • Handle common objections confidently and professionally.
  • Secure qualified phone appointments, consultations, estimates, bookings, or onsite walkthroughs.
  • Maintain strong activity levels without sacrificing conversation quality.

Lead Qualification

  • Determine whether a prospect meets the company’s established qualification criteria.
  • Identify the correct decision-maker and their level of authority.
  • Understand the prospect’s current provider or service arrangement.
  • Identify relevant needs, challenges, dissatisfaction, or opportunities.
  • Determine timing, urgency, level of interest, and readiness to move forward.
  • Confirm that booked appointments or walkthroughs represent legitimate opportunities.
  • Avoid booking unqualified prospects simply to increase appointment numbers.
  • Recognize buying signals and guide interested prospects toward the appropriate next step.
  • Clearly distinguish between qualified, unqualified, nurturing, unavailable, and non-responsive leads.
  • Provide management with clear and accurate information about each qualified opportunity.

Lead Nurturing and Follow-Up

  • Follow up with prospects who expressed interest but were not ready to book immediately.
  • Nurture long-term opportunities through phone calls, SMS, and email when applicable.
  • Re-engage older leads, missed opportunities, no-response prospects, and previous inquiries.
  • Maintain consistent follow-up without over-contacting prospects.
  • Track callback dates, contract renewal periods, future interest, and decision timelines.
  • Ensure qualified prospects do not fall through the cracks because of poor follow-up.
  • Build familiarity and trust with prospects over multiple conversations.
  • Move nurturing leads toward a booked appointment, walkthrough, or clear final outcome.

Appointment and Walkthrough Booking

  • Convert qualified interest into booked appointments, consultations, estimates, or walkthroughs.
  • Confirm the appointment date, time, location, contact person, and decision-maker.
  • Clearly explain the purpose and value of the appointment.
  • Confirm that the prospect has genuine interest before booking.
  • Set the correct expectations before handing the opportunity to management or the field sales team.
  • Reduce cancellations and no-shows through proper qualification and confirmation.
  • Follow up on missed, cancelled, or rescheduled appointments.
  • Provide a complete and accurate handoff to the appropriate manager.
  • Confirm that all relevant prospect information has been collected before the appointment.

Lead Generation and Prospect Research

When the available calling list has been completed or additional prospects are needed, the candidate will be expected to assist with lead generation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Researching businesses through Google, LinkedIn, Google Maps, company websites, directories, and approved lead-generation tools.
  • Identifying businesses that meet the company’s target-market criteria.
  • Finding business owners, managers, directors, facility contacts, and other decision-makers.
  • Gathering phone numbers, email addresses, locations, company information, and relevant business details.
  • Verifying leads before submitting them to the team.
  • Identifying duplicate, invalid, closed, irrelevant, or low-quality leads.
  • Helping build clean, organized, and properly targeted calling lists.
  • Prioritizing leads based on company size, service need, location, decision-maker accessibility, and opportunity value.
  • Identifying new industries, territories, or business categories that may present sales opportunities.
  • Supporting the team in maintaining a consistent supply of qualified prospects.

Sales Script Development and Optimization

The successful candidate must be capable of independently creating, testing, and improving high-converting sales scripts.

This person should not rely solely on a company-provided script. They must be able to:

  • Create original cold-calling scripts based on the company’s services, target market, buyer profile, and campaign objective.
  • Research the target industry before developing the calling approach.
  • Develop separate approaches for gatekeepers, decision-makers, follow-up calls, nurturing, reactivation, appointment setting, and closing.
  • Formulate strong opening statements, discovery questions, qualification questions, value propositions, objection responses, and closing transitions.
  • Adjust messaging for different industries, services, prospect types, and levels of awareness.
  • Create scripts that sound conversational and consultative rather than robotic.
  • Test different openings, questions, offers, and calls to action.
  • Review call recordings, prospect reactions, objections, and conversion results.
  • Identify where conversations are breaking down.
  • Make evidence-based adjustments to improve performance.
  • Continuously optimize scripts based on measurable results.
  • Document approved scripts so they can be taught and replicated by other callers.
  • Create supporting objection-handling guides, follow-up frameworks, and call-flow documents.
  • Train tea ---------- mbers to understand the reasoning behind the script rather than simply reading it word for word.

Candidates should be prepared to explain their script-development process and provide examples of scripts or calling frameworks they have previously created.

A script will only be considered proven when it consistently produces measurable improvements such as:

  • More decision-maker conversations
  • Higher qualified-lead rates
  • Improved booking or walkthrough conversion
  • Stronger follow-up results
  • Fewer early call rejections
  • Better appointment attendance
  • Higher-quality sales opportunities

The objective is to create a repeatable and scalable calling system, not simply a script that sounds good on paper.

Call Documentation and System Familiarity

CRM and pipeline management will remain under upper management. However, the candidate must understand how to work within company systems and accurately document sales activity.

The candidate should be able to:

  • Enter clear call notes after each meaningful conversation.
  • Record relevant prospect information, objections, needs, and next steps.
  • Update basic contact information when required.
  • Schedule callbacks and follow-up activities.
  • Follow the company’s established call-disposition and documentation procedures.
  • Understand how leads move through a sales process.
  • Provide accurate information so management can oversee the pipeline effectively.
  • Learn the company’s CRM and calling systems quickly.
  • Review sales activity and conversion information when developing scripts or coaching callers.
  • Understand CRM and pipeline processes sufficiently to support a future leadership role.

The candidate will not be responsible for overall CRM administration, pipeline design, workflow management, or management-level reporting unless the role later develops into a formal leadership position.

Training and Leadership Development

This position has the potential to develop into a senior or team-lead role.
The successful candidate should be able to:

  • Demonstrate calling practices that can become the standard for the team.
  • Help onboard and train new callers.
  • Teach other callers how to qualify prospects and create genuine interest.
  • Train tea ---------- mbers on scripts, discovery questions, objection handling, follow-up, and natural call delivery.
  • Review call recordings and provide constructive feedback.
  • Identify common performance issues and recommend improvements.
  • Help create call-quality scorecards and coaching standards.
  • Lead roleplays and call-practice sessions.
